Fact #978: The governments of 12 countries around the world actually regulate the names parents can give to their child.

The reasons for the laws vary dramatically by country: many Scandinavian democracies regulate names out of concern for the child’s reputation and well-being. On the other hand, Morocco, for instance, banned ethnic Berber names for years.
